Thai Massage: Therapeutic Thai Fundamentals with Chuck Duff
This 2-disc DVD set by Thai Bodywork founder Chuck Duff shows in detail a 2.5 hour therapeutic Thai massage treatment. The fourth title in the Thai Bodywork DVD Series, this DVD integrates aspects of Northern, Southern, Royal and Jap Sen (nerve touch) styles, with extensive anatomical and energetic background. Each technique is explained carefully, and supported with closeups and animations showing the energy lines and points used. This DVD corresponds to the Level 2 Thai Massage training at Chuck's School, ThaiBodywork School of Thai Massage.
Chuck's teaching emphasizes body mechanics, using core energy and sensitivity to the body's language, and places each technique in context as to its relationship to Sen lines, effects on specific muscles and pain conditions. The beautiful production values in this exquisitely produced DVD bring Chuck Duff's expert therapeutic insights to life.
While Thai yoga massage has been in existence for hundreds of years, its therapeutic application has been somewhat opaque to the student, due to a lack of written materials and a tradition of oral teachings. Also, due to the fact that Thailand has no tradition of research in anatomy or dissection, only recently have schools begun to teach Thai techniques in terms of Western anatomy.
Chuck Duff is on the faculty of Pacific College of Oriental Medicine and founded Thai Bodywork School in Evanston, IL in 2001. Chuck, who has taught over 1,000 practitioners, has based his career on the treatment of pain and has systematically studied the relationship of ancient Thai techniques to western clinical approaches. He created Clinical Thai Bodywork (CTB) as an outgrowth of his own very successful practice and research. CTB combines the techniques of Traditional Thai yoga with the insights of myofascial trigger point therapy, osteopathic principles and acupoints, and is a highly effective treatment for pain and dysfunction.
This video presents the basic ideas of CTB in the context of a 2.5 hour Thai massage sequence. The sequence can be performed intact, or specific segments can be added to a session where appropriate. The DVD is not a replacement for proper training in Thai bodywork, which is a sophisticated healing art that requires personal instruction with a qualified teacher.
HandsFree Thai Massage DVD: The Commoner Style with Chuck Duff
This
DVD by Chuck Duff provides in-depth instruction of the techniques of HandsFree
Thai™, which allow the practitioner to work on large
or heavily muscled clients in a way that is highly beneficial for the
client and the practitioner. Commoner or rural style (Nuad Chaleisak)
techniques allow the therapist to provide broad, deep pressure using
feet, knees, shins and highly efficent body mechanics, avoiding stress
on the hands or shoulders. Over 100 asana variations are taught as
a 2 hour treatment sequence employing all treatment attitudes.
Thai massage has a long tradition of walking techniques, as do many other cultures. These techniques can be practiced without elaborate equipment such as ropes, bars or specially made treatment rooms. If the practitioner is developing balance, a simple object like a chair is sufficient to help maintain safe balance while on the client. We teach the student to be able to do this work with as little mechanical assistance as possible.
HandsFree
Thai™ is an excellent way for the practitioner to safely work
with athletes and other clients who require deeper pressure without
endangering the hands, wrists and shoulders. As in all of our courses,
we maintain a strong therapeutic focus in our teaching, guiding the
student in how to work with specific issues of pain or dysfunction.
We employ the principles of Clinical Thai Bodywork to teach the student
patterns of pain and its origins while using HandsFree techniques.

Thai Massage DVD - Thai Massage: An Introduction for the Mat and Table
This comprehensive 100-minute Thai massage DVD, from Certified Instructor
Chuck Duff, shows in detail a 1-hour Thai
massage sequence, applying
the
same sequence
on both the mat and the table
with appropriate body mechanics. No prior knowledge is assumed.
Thai massage is unique in that it can benefit both the giver and the receiver if properly performed. Western style therapists often experience symptoms of occupational disability, due to an over-reliance on strength. Thai massage can save the student's hands and give new life to a career, particularly as Chuck teaches it.
Chuck's highly regarded teaching style emphasizes proper alignment, positioning, body mechanics, and working with core energy rather than muscle strength. Through mindful repetition, the student is guided into learning the concepts of effortless application. Chuck's background in yoga, martial arts and therapeutic bodywork gives him a unique and powerful framework for teaching efficient full-body movement.
Chuck first teaches the viewer how to perform a highly effective 1-hour Thai massage sequence on the mat, beginning from first principles. Once the concepts of fluid, effortless movement are established on the mat, he covers the specific adaptations that are necessary on the table, and shows the complete flow as it looks on the table.
The DVD also introduces several other important Thai massage topics
covered at Thai Bodywork School of Thai Massage, including HandsFree
Thai ™, Clinical Thai Bodywork, and Luk Pra Kob herbal compress
treatments.
HandsFree Thai is a unique and exciting training developed by Chuck to provide a comprehensive treatment modality that totally avoids stress on the therapist's upper body. The broad pressure provided by this style is wonderful for the receiver, particularly athletes and larger clients.
Clinical Thai Bodywork grew out of Chuck's experience in successfully treating conditions of pain and dysfunction. This course series gives the student a framework and tools for addressing specific pain conditions, while adhering to the traditional principles and techniques of Thai massage.

Thai Massage DVD - The Northern Style (Nuad Boran) with Chuck Duff
This 3.5 hour Thai masssage video (on 2 DVDs) presents the complete sequence of Northern Style Thai Massage as we teach it in our 70-hour Level 3 course. Chuck Duff performs an actual massage on a model while providing instructional commentary on body mechanics and technique for each pose.
The Northern or Chiang Mai style is by far the most popular form of Thai massage practiced today. There is a strong emphasis on movement and stretching, making it both enjoyable and therapeutic. The sequence presented in the video closely follows the full routine taught at the Northern Medicine Hospital in Chiang Mai, under the direction of famed master Aachan Sintorn. Chuck Duff, who is a faculty member at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, has certified over 400 practitioners in Thai Massage, and this Thai massage video draws on his extensive teaching experience.
All Thai massage videos are not created equal. This in-depth video
exploration of Nuad Boran has been called by one Amazon reviewer the "best
Thai massage instructional video available", rating 5 stars
on Amazon.
Chuck Duff's teaching reflects his diverse influences as a student of Buddhism, a martial artist and bodyworker. He places strong emphasis on body mechanics, working safely and efficiently.
Chuck's prior students have given glowing reviews of his teaching -- please see the student comments page for examples.
